There are many exciting things you can do in Phuket town, like island hopping, night market, museum visit, etc. However, you may not find many tourists roaming around as there is no beach near or zero nightlife and everything closes after 8:00 pm in this old town.
Nevertheless, this place will suit you if you are looking for something less crowded and calm place in Phuket. Surprisingly, Phuket town hotels and hostels are 30-40% cheaper than Phuket city(near Patong) and you can get public transport bus from Phuket town to other cities in Thailand, to Bankok, Surat Thani, Krabi, etc. It’s very easy to get to the Phuket weekend market from Patong which is near to the Phuket town bus terminal 2.
Things you can do in Phuket town
Basically, I have selected some of the top things to do in Phuket town you must visit while staying in Phuket town
# Island hopping
Rassada Pier is a major pier for Phuket – Phi Phi boat connections. That makes it easier and cheaper to get boats and ferries to the Phi-Phi islands from Phuket town. Also, ferries, as well as speed boats, run about 30 minutes late than the scheduled time. Plan with that in mind if you need to get back from any islands to this pier.
You can get boats and ferries from Phi-Phi Islands to Maya Bay(temporary closed), Klong Jirad Pier(Krabi), Koh Lanta (Saladan Pier), and connecting boats to other Islands.
# Phuket Trickeye Museum
A great illusion and creative fun place, where you can stand to take the picture/scene in front of the picture/art. Though the place is small with few paintings, still great. The best illusion is right next to the exit. Just follow the white arrows to see the building changes as you change your position.
Entrance tickets to Phuket Trickeye Museum currently cost $12 per person(approx), while a popular guided tour starts around US$ 70.00 per person.
# Rang Hill viewpoint in Phuket old town
The Rang Hill view point is close to The Phuket town and you can get there on foot. If you get lucky then you can see lots of monkeys. Beware of your belongings as monkeys are going to snatch whatever is shiny and looks like food.
# Phuket town central market
The central market is famous for superb street food and clothes stalls. Girls dressed in shorts and tight t-shirts dance on bars holding onto rings and piles. All sorts of massages are available.
Phuket town central market opens all days of the week from 4 pm to 8 pm
# Sunday walking street market in Phuket town
This is also known as the weekend market located in the old town Phuket. You will find a lot of local food stalls here and each one offering a unique taste. You can also find shops offering dresses, shoes, sandals, ornaments, etc. It’s more for eating and roaming around, therefore, I won’t recommend this place for shopping. You can also enjoy back to back live performance while eating at different stalls or get a seat and enjoy while eating tasty Thai food.
Sunday walking street market opens only on Sunday from 4 pm to 10 pm(best time to visit 5-10 pm)
# Phuket Indy night market
Fantastic food, marvelous music, and cool clothes. Similar to the Sunday walking street market but opens three days a week. Also, it’s a little less crowded and cheaper than the weekend market.
Phuket Indy night market opens on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from pm to 10 pm
# Phuket Poonphol Food Market
Similar to the above two-night markets, so if you are staying for a week then, you can enjoy local food there. Be careful with spices some are extremely spicy.
Poonphol Food Market opens every day of a week from 3 pm to 9 pm.
# Phuket Chatuchak
If you are planning for large shopping, do visit. So huge, too much to walk, you can even get everything in one place, local market. Actually, it will take your whole day to cover all the shops, therefore, it’s better you keep one day for this market only.
Phuket Chatuchak opens three days a week Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 9 am to 9 pm.
# Methee Phuket Factory (special nut shop)
Actually, selling local food products like cashew nuts, dry fruits, some cooking paste, etc. and tasting is available for free. When you enter, the first thing you see is a cashew tree, which looks amazing. Accept cash and credit card.
# Thai Hua Museum in Phuket old town
This museum explains the life of the Chinese expat in Phuket. The museum is located over two floors in an old Chinese school. Great information about Thailand. Not the biggest of museums in size however, a must-visit place if you are interested to learn Thailand history.
Thai Hua Museum entry ticket Costs 200 baht to enter and opens all days of the week from 9 am to 5 pm.
Things to do in Phuket town at night
Actually, Phuket town is not famous for nightlife because every think gets close after 8 pm. , it’s more of a chilling place from the city crowd and noise. Only go to the old town, if you are looking for clam and noise-free places. However, there are so many different activities to do like, trickyeye museums, night market, etc. plus I found Phuket town cheap for accommodation.
You may not find exciting things to do in Phuket old town however, you can take a halt for 2-3 days before leaving for another city by Phuket bus terminal 2. Also, there is a night walking market and Trickeye museum, which I think one of the best things to do in Phuket Town.
Visit Phuket ferry website for booking boats and ferries for the Phi-Phi Islands tour.
